City boys go overboard on their whisky order and rack up an £11,000 bill in West End restaurant
The Capitalist once thought, naively, that five-figure bills can only be racked up by ordering multiple bottles of Dom Perignon from bars in Mayfair or the Square Mile.
Our doubts were first raised when, we brought you the news that a group of wealthy tourists managed to spend over £10,000 celebrating the Russian Orthodox new year in the city, dining almost exclusively on kobe beef and champers earlier this year.
And now there's more evidence of just how OTT you can go: Fitzrovia-based Highlands eatery Mac & Wild has got in touch to boast that a party of City boys shelled out over £11,000 last week on whisky and scotch eggs.
According to the West End restaurant, the chaps "went all out and got a meal fit for William Wallace", starting with a round of Irn Bru, haggis pops and scotch eggs and ending in 10 bottles of Glenrothes 88 Speyside Single Malt.
Ok, so there were the usual suspects along the way. After nibbles, six of our lads shared three orders of the chateaubriand, while the others opted for modest pub fare; three burgers and a fish pie.
Clearly not wanting their more frugal friends to dominate proceedings, four bottles of champagne soon graced the table, including a rather tasty vintage Bollinger from 2004, before the cocktail orders came in. One punter got himself a "bloody shot" which was either flavoured with tomato juice or bitterly resented by the recipient, tacking another £8 to the already four-figure sum.
By this point, we can assume the big-spenders were feeling merry, and were so impressed by their northern feast they ordered over 100 bottles of whisky to go.
Crafty staff at Mac & Wild tacked the bottle orders on to the dinner bill itself, and with the weight of the liquor bringing Tuesday night's cost up to £10,027.85, a £1,253.48 service charge brings the final bill to an impressive £11,281.53.
You'll know it was your boss if every staff leaving present this year is a bottle of Scotland's finest.
