Clubs smash Jan records
THE £215m spent by Premier League clubs before last night’s deadline set a new record for the January window – and fulfilled one of Morning Wire’s predictions.
More than £130m was spent yesterday alone – four times the entire sum shelled out in January 2010 and topping the previous best of 2008.
Six deals topped £20m – those for Fernando Torres, Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Edin Dzeko, Darren Bent and David Luiz – while the fees for Torres and Carroll both eclipsed the previous record of £32m Manchester City paid for Robinho in August 2008.
Aston Villa’s £24m move for Bent earlier last month prompted Morning Wire to project that the domino effect would see the total amount exceed £100m. It did – and then some.
