Collins eyes Scotland job but Coyle pulls out of race
FORMER Hibernian manager John Collins has thrown his hat into the ring to succeed George Burley as Scotland coach.
Ex-Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood and Kilmarnock’s Jim Jefferies have also stated their interest in the job, while former national team manager Craig Brown has admitted he could be tempted back.
But Burnley’s Owen Coyle has ruled himself out of the running to replace Burley, who was sacked on Monday after the 3-0 friendly defeat to Wales at the weekend. Former Scotland midfielder Collins is out of work after leaving Belgian side Charleroi earlier this year. And although he lacks experience, with Hibs the only other club he has managed, the 41-year-old says he is ready to revive the flagging side.
“I’d be interested in managing the national team,” said Collins. “But it’s not for me to put my name forward, it’s for the SFA to draw up their list.”
Calderwood, who left Aberdeen in the summer, said it would be “a wonderful honour”, while Jefferies rejected the suggestion the role was “a poisoned chalice”.
