Coming home? Exclusive Morning Wire poll finds half of Brits believe England can win Euro 2020
Fans are split on whether football really might be coming home after England made a winning start to Euro 2020.
51 per cent say they believe England can win the tournament but 49 per cent remain unconvinced, an exclusive poll for Morning Wire by OnePulse found.
And just 50 per cent say they have more faith in England following their 1-0 win over Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.
England have never won a European Championship and their only triumph came at the home World Cup in 1966.
But they reached the semi-finals at their last major tournament and bookmakers rate them joint 5/1 favourites with France at Euro 2020.
Men and 55-64-year-olds have most faith in England
Men are considerably more confident in England’s chances than women, according the snap poll of a UK sample conducted today.
57 per cent of male respondents rate Gareth Southgate’s team as contenders compared only 46 per cent of females.
Those aged 55-64 are the most bullish about England, with 54 per cent believing in their chances.
The least optimistic are 18-20-year-olds, of whom just 40 per cent think the Three Lions can win.
Fans favour Sterling over Phillips as man of the match
Kalvin Phillips has been widely hailed as England’s best player against Croatia, but fans rated Raheem Sterling their man of the match.
Sterling, who scored the only goal of the game just 500 yards from his childhood home in Brent, polled 35 per cent of the vote.
Phillips, who put in a dominant midfield display, received 32 per cent and Phil Foden 11 per cent.
