CYCLING: Spain’s Alberto Contador edged closer to victory in the Tour de France after finishing second in a gruelling 17th stage, from Bourg St Maurice to Le Grand Bornand.

The Astana rider, 26, finished second, in between the Schleck brothers, Frank and Andy, who now lie third and second respectively in the overall standings.

Lance Armstrong drops to fourth, while Britain’s Bradley Wiggins is now sixth after a seventh-place finish.
