Crocked Beckham remains ‘positive’
DAVID BECKHAM revealed he was “feeling positive” last night after describing surgery on his ruptured Achilles as a “success”.
The England midfielder underwent an operation by surgeon Sakari Orava in Finland on Monday after picking up an injury playing for AC Milan at the weekend, which has forced him out of this summer’s World Cup.
Beckham, 34, is now on crutches and is expected to have his foot in plaster for up to eight weeks.
But he is expected to make a full recovery in around five months, giving him opportunity to add to his 115 England caps during the 2012 Euro qualifiers, which start in the autumn.
“I’m feeling positive and now concentrating on getting back to full fitness over the coming months,” Beckham said.
“The operation was a success and I’d like to thank Dr Orava and all the medical staff who looked after me during my time in Finland.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their messages of support, they mean a lot to me.”
Beckham sustained the injury while playing in his second loan stint with AC Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy as he looked to prove his fitness to international coach Fabio Capello and become the first England player to play in four World Cups.
Asked whether Beckham would be able to play in South Africa this June, Professor Orava said: “No, I don’t think so…healing takes a long time.”
Beckham was joined in Finland by his wife Victoria yesterday as Professor Orava presented him with a detailed rehabilitation programme.
