Crossrail opens its doors to give young Londoners a glimpse of Europe’s biggest construction project
Crossrail is opening its doors this weekend, offering young Londoners the chance to see what Europe's largest construction project looks like from the inside.
This weekend Crossrail is holding a free ticketed Open Doors event, aimed at 11 to 24-year-olds interested in the construction industry, as well as parents and teachers, to visit sites including Canning Town, Liverpool Street, Ilford, Whitechapel, Pudding Mill Lane, Custom House and Tottenham Court Road.
Visitors will meet the team behind the project, receive a presentation on the work and given examples of the kinds of career opportunities available in the construction industry.
They will also be shown some of the tunnels and shafts that have been completed so far. Each tour takes an hour, and comes with a warning that it is not suitable for people with restricted mobility or those who suffer from vertigo.
“Visitors must be reasonably fit and able to walk up and down flights of stairs and comfortable at looking down at significant depth from heights,” the blurb says.
Tickets are almost sold out, but this event is one of a series of tours aimed at young people interested in the construction industry.
Stretching from Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, Crossrail will span more than 100km of track including 21km of new twin-bore rail tunnels and nine new stations.
