Crossrail programme turns its hand to Southall

Commuters using Southall Station can now look forward to a brand new building, as Ealing Council has approved new design proposals for the station.
 
Work on the project, which is part of the Crossrail programme, is due to begin this summer and is expected to last for around two years.
 
Crossrail announced the redesign will provide an elegant glass and steel structure to let in natural light, while a new forecourt should make it easier for passengers to get in and out of the station. 
 
Matthew White, Crossrail surface director, said the improvements would transform the station, providing a focal point for the local area.
 
Leader of Ealing Council Julian Bell added, “It is clear that the new station and the arrival of Crossrail will bring long lasting benefits not only for commuters but for the area as a whole.”
 
Work to connect the 26 miles of tunnels required for the Crossrail programme finally finished last week after three years of round-the-clock labour.
