Croydon tram accident: London mayor Sadiq Khan’s message to Londoners affected by the tragedy at Sandilands
London mayor Sadiq Khan last night praised the emergency services for their work in helping the victims of the tragic tram accident in Croydon earlier this week, in which seven people lost their lives.
Police yesterday confirmed that six men and one woman were killed when a tram derailed and overturned near the Sandilands stop in south London on Wednesday. The tram driver was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter that day, but was later released on bail.
In his message to those affected by the tragedy, the mayor said the response of the emergency services was "one of the reasons London is the greatest city in the world".
Khan said his thoughts were with the families of those who had died in the accident, and sent "best wishes to those who are injured".
"We thank and salute the emergency services in the local community who worked their socks off from 6am on Wednesday morning and are still working hard now," he added.
"That's one of the reasons we're grateful to the emergency services and one of the reasons London is the greatest city in the world."
