David De Gea set for new Manchester United deal
Goalkeeper David de Gea’s long-term future could lie at Manchester United after the Old Trafford club yesterday opened talks over a new contract with the Spaniard.
Former Atletico stopper De Gea saw a proposed £29m move to Real Madrid collapse on transfer deadline day after the two clubs failed to complete the necessary paperwork in time.
Despite the failure to conclude the deal, the possibility remained for De Gea, whose current United contract expires in 2016, to re-open talks with Madrid in January in view of a free transfer next summer.
But the situation is not so clear cut now after the 24-year-old this week returned to the north west following his international commitments with Spain, and his agent Jorge Mendes attended the club’s training complex yesterday.
De Gea has been voted United’s best player for the past two campaigns but is yet to feature this season given the speculation over his future. It remains unclear whether he will feature for United against Liverpool in tomorrow’s late kick-off.
