Big four accountancy firm Deloitte promoted 22 women to the position of partner today, in its biggest ever round of appointments.

The promotion of 75 new partners also includes 23 outside London as the business expands its reach outside the capital. And it announced a “return to work” scheme designed to help women who have been absent from the workplace for several years.

The 12-week paid internships will run in school term-time from September to December, and are available for women who have been out of work for three to six years.

“Gender diversity at leadership levels remains a challenge for many businesses but there is an ever-increasing understanding of the issues that hold women back in the workplace and the ways in which we can best tackle these,” said managing director Emma Codd.

“We have implemented a series of actions to increase the number of women we recruit, to ensure that development opportunities are clearly available and to provide a working environment that enables women to balance a successful career with family life.”

By business line, 21 of the new partners work in audit while a further 17 are in tax. Another 16 work in the consultancy arm, and 13 are corporate finance partners.
