DOJ orders IRS to release Trump tax returns

The Internal Revenue Service has been ordered to turn over Donald Trump’s tax returns to a House committee by the US Department of Justice.

The IRS was told to hand over the former US president’s tax returns after a House panel had “invoked sufficient reasons” for obtaining them.

The order comes after the DOJ released an internal memo revealing Trump had pressured officials to label the US 2020 election as corrupt and “leave the rest to me.”

In response to the order, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: “Today, the Biden administration has delivered a victory for the rule of law, as it respects the public interest by complying with Chairman [Richard] Neal’s request for Donald Trump’s tax returns.”

“Access to former President Trump’s tax returns is a matter of national security. The American people deserve to know the facts of his troubling conflicts of interest and undermining of our security and democracy as president.”

Traditionally, US presidential candidates disclose their tax returns, but they are not legally obliged to do so.

In the 2016 campaign, Trump did not publish his tax returns, explaining they were under IRS audit. He did not release them whilst he held the Oval Office.
