Ruling details
The court said Kavala’s continued detention violated his right to a fair trial, freedom of expression and freedom of association, according to BBC World.
It also described his aggravated life sentence as "inhuman and degrading treatment" and identified a systemic problem in Turkey of detaining and prosecuting political opponents, human‑rights defenders and journalists.

Turkey's response
Turkey has previously ignored two earlier ECHR rulings on the case. The government has not yet confirmed whether it will comply with the latest binding decision.
The ruling arrives weeks before the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers is due to discuss the case, adding pressure on Ankara.
