EE to launch superspeed 4G trial in London – Download a 2GB movie in 57 seconds
Network operator EE has announced the launch of a range of new 4G plans, alongside the trial of a 300Mbps network in London. That superfast trial will start this November, with a wider rollout planned for 2014.
To give an idea of just how fast 300Mbps is – A standard definition movie weighs in at around 700MB, so you could download that in 19 seconds. Downloading a song will be almost instantaneous.
Now that we're done being excited about that, EE's other plans include a 4GEE Extra plan, with the biggest data packages in the UK. For £18.99 a month, you can get the cheapest 4G tariff, or opting for the first 4G pay as you go plan will set you back £129.99.
Analyst Kester Mann of CCS Insight considers the move a "pre-emptive strike against 3, which intends to launch its 4G network in December with no extra charge."
Mann says that EE is "clearly looking broaden its target market with more affordable tariffs" and that "the move will also force Vodafone and O2 to reassess their 4G pricing strategy."
Chief executive Olaf Swantee said that the provider is now offering plans intended for "light users, super users, regular users, data sharers and Britain's mobile workforce". A lot more flexibility on offer.
