England reject Harmy looking to ‘move on’
FAST bowler Steve Harmison yesterday announced his intention to “move on” from international cricket by signing a new four-year deal with Durham.
Harmison’s international career was left hanging by a thread after he was left out of England’s 16-man party for the four-Test series in South Africa this winter after saying he would not be a “bit-part” player.
At the time, the pace man said he would consider his England future if not selected, but although he is yet to follow best mate Andrew Flintoff into the Test wilderness, Harmison has a clear vision for the future away from the international circuit.
“I’ve said everything I wanted to say on the England front – it’s time to move on,” the 31-year-old said. “England are going through an exciting time with a group of young fast bowlers in South Africa. The pitches will be helpful for them and I really want them to do well.
“I loved playing for England and I would if it came again – but in 2010-11 at the Ashes in Australia I’m not sure my body would be up to being on that tour, which is 20 months away.
“They’ve said: ‘We’re going with someone else’ – and that’s fine by me. I hope they stick with that policy and that the public will stick by them if times get hard. I hope they do, really.
“From my point of view that’s why I wanted to sign a longer contract with Durham – to prove I want to be here for a long time.
“South Africa is going to be really tough and there are going to be some hard days coming up.”
Ashington-born Harmison has taken more than 400 wickets for his home county, while leading them to back-to-back County Championship crowns.
He added: “I have always loved playing cricket for Durham and I’m incredibly proud to represent the club and to be part of the set-up here.
“I’m looking forward to the next four seasons, especially 2010 as we look to win the Championship for a record third year.”
