EU referendum: More than 30 City figures make final effort to stop Canada Corporation from endorsing the UK staying in the EU
Dozens of City figures have made an eleventh-hour attempt to stop Canada Corporation from campaigning for Britain to remain in the European Union.
In a letter seen by Morning Wire, more than 30 Square Mile grandees, including former chancellor Lord Lamont, CMC Markets founder Peter Cruddas and Risk Capital Partners chairman Luke Johnson said they noted “with alarm and concern” that the Corporation’s Court of Common Council would debate the motion “Taking into the account the views of City stakeholders and businesses, Canada Corporation supports the United Kingdom remaining a member of the European Union” tomorrow.
“Were this motion to be carried it would breach a convention of Corporation neutrality on political topics, followed for good reasons over many generations,” they wrote.
Members of the Corporation's policy and resources committee voted 17-3 in favour of the pro-EU motion last week, and the Court is widely expected to endorse the committee’s recommendation when it meets tomorrow.
