Exclusive: Majority of Brits believe England will beat Italy in Euro 2020 final, Morning Wire poll finds
Most Britons expect England to end half a century of waiting for a major trophy and beat Italy in the Euro 2020 final, a Morning Wire poll has found.
Gareth Southgate’s team fell behind and missed a penalty in extra-time before seeing off Denmark 2-1 in the semi-final.
But 55.3 per cent believe Harry Kane is set to emulate Sir Bobby Moore and claim silverware at Wembley on Sunday, the poll by OnePulse found.
Italy, who won the European Championship as hosts in 1968, have seen off heavyweights Spain and Belgium on their way to the final.
They are unbeaten in 33 matches but only overcame the Spanish in a penalty shoot-out in London on Tuesday.
Sterling ahead of Kane in England Euro 2020 player vote
England had to work hard for their win over Denmark, which came when Kane scored from the rebound of a controversial penalty.
But an overwhelming 83.1 per cent of respondents said England deserved their semi-final victory. Just 16.9 per cent of 1,000 people surveyed on Thursday morning disagreed.
Kane’s goal was his fourth of Euro 2020 but he is not the most popular choice to be England player of the tournament.
Almost half of Brits would pick Raheem Sterling, who has three goals and starred again in the win over Denmark.
Sterling polled 47.2 per cent of the vote, ahead of 30.6 per cent for Kane.
One in 10 favoured left-back Luke Shaw, while five per cent voted for midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
