Exclusive: Most Brits expect England to beat Germany at Euro 2020 and avenge previous major tournament defeats
Most Britons expect England to overcome Germany when they clash at Euro 2020 on Tuesday, according to a Morning Wire poll.
Germany have inflicted some of England’s most painful major tournament defeats, eliminating them in 1990, 1996 and 2010.
But a slight majority of 52 per cent believe Gareth Southgate’s team will avenge those defeats at Wembley.
Confidence that England will beat Germany is highest among Britons aged 18-20 and 55-64, the poll by OnePulse found.
Both men and women expect a home win but male respondents are more likely to be bullish.
Brits happy with England so far and also fancy Italy
Despite some criticism of England at the tournament, only a quarter of Britons say they feel disappointed with performances.
More than half say England have played at the level they expected in their group stage games, while 20 per cent say it has been better than they hoped.
They beat Croatia, drew with Scotland and beat the Czech Republic to finish top of Group D, but did so with little fanfare.
Should England fail to win Euro 2020, Italy would be the most popular champions among Brits.
The Azzurri polled almost a quarter of the vote, ahead of Denmark.
Denmark have been touted as fans’ second team following the response to star Christian Eriksen’s serious illness earlier in the tournament.
Germany may be England’s nemeses in football but polled almost 16 per cent of the vote, as did Belgium.
