At 8pm TONIGHT: Three quarters of Brits expect England to swat Ukraine aside at Euro 2020 – and four in 10 think they’ll go on to lift the trophy
Three quarters of Britons expect England to take another step towards Euro 2020 glory by beating Ukraine tonight.
A poll for Morning Wire by OnePulse found that 75.9 per cent predict England to win their quarter-final in Rome this evening.
And almost four in 10 are now convinced that England will end 55 years of waiting for a major trophy by winning Euro 2020.
Gareth Southgate’s team marched into the last eight with a cathartic 2-0 victory over Germany at Wembley earlier this week.
With world champions France and holders Portugal already out, they are the bookmakers’ new favourite to be crowned on 11 July.
And 38.9 per cent expect Southgate’s men to go all the way, the poll of 1,000 Brits found.
Ukraine stand in their way but have never made it past the quarter-finals of a tournament. England, meanwhile, reached the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup.
Fans split on England boss Southgate’s future
Brits are split on reports that Southgate is expected to be handed a new contract.
Almost half (47.8 per cent) are happy for him to stay in charge beyond Euro 2020 no matter what.
But others want to see England progress first. A further 7.7 per cent would give him a new deal if England beat Ukraine, 15.7 per cent want him to get to the final and 18.7 per cent will only settle for the trophy.
A small minority – 10.1 per cent – don’t want Southgate to stay on past this tournament.
