F1 driver Sergio Perez dumps sponsor over tweet mocking Mexicans following Donald Trump’s election
Force India driver Sergio Perez has dumped one of his sponsors after they issued a tweet mocking his fellow Mexicans following Donald Trump’s election as United States president.
Perez was left unimpressed as sunglasses manufacturer Hawkers made reference to Trump’s promise during his campaign that he would be minded to build a wall between the countries if he won.
“Mexicans, put on these glasses so they can’t see your crying eyes tomorrow when building the wall,” Hawkers wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
Perez retorted: “What a bad commentary. Today I am ending my relationship with @HawkersMX. I will not allow anyone to make fun of my country.”
Britain’s Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, has promised Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg a fight until the bitter end as he bids to deny his rival a maiden world championship at this weekend’s Brazilian grand prix.
Germany’s Rosberg holds a 19-point lead and will be crowned champion should he win at Interlagos, where he has won for the past two seasons. Hamilton, meanwhile, has never triumphed in Brazil.
Hamilton said: “One outcome would be painful and the other would be a great achievement. Regardless, I’m going to keep pushing.”
