FBI says it may be able to unlock San Bernardino iPhone and asks court to cancel hearing
The FBI says it may have found a way to unlock the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino attackers without help from Apple, leading the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to file a request to postpone a hearing scheduled for today.
A judge has reportedly allowed the continuation, meaning Apple's legal battle has been shelved for now.
The phone was used by gunman Rizwan Farook who, together with his wife, killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, last year.
The DoJ had intended to seek a court order forcing Apple to comply with the FBI's request for assistance.
However, the tech giant said it would resist all attempts to make it break through the encryption on the phone.
Last week, Apple boss Tim Cook said such a move would be "bad for the United States".
Meanwhile, at the beginning of March, 17 major tech firms filed a brief backing Apple in its resistance of the FBI's demands.
News of the court case's cancellation comes just hours after the tech giant unveiled its new phone, the iPhone se.
