Actor and screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge has sealed a bumper deal with Amazon Studios, just days after sweeping up three Emmy awards.

The Fleabag star has inked an overall deal to create exclusive new TV shows, which will be streamed on Amazon Prime.

Amazon did not reveal details about the value of the deal, but sources told Variety it was worth roughly $20m (£16m) a year.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said: “We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Phoebe at Amazon Studios. As evident in her great success at the Emmy Awards this week, she is clever, brilliant, generous and a virtuoso on multiple fronts including writing, acting and producing.

“Fleabag has been a gift to our Prime Video customers and we are excited for what comes next from this brilliant mind to dazzle and delight our global audience.”

The deal is a major coup for Amazon, which is facing an onslaught of tough new competition in the streaming market.

Both Apple and Disney are set to launch their eagerly-anticipated streaming platforms in November, sparking a content arms race as media giants battle to secure the best shows.

Studios revenue rose three per cent to £893m, driven by an 11 per cent jump in external sales to streaming platforms.

Waller-Bridge rose to prominence through Fleabag, which first appeared as a one-woman show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013.

The first series of the subsequent TV show, produced for the BBC and Amazon Studios, earned Waller-Bridge a Bafta, while the second series picked up six Emmy awards on Sunday.

The actor and producer also gained critical acclaim as a writer on hit BBC series Killing Eve, starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer.

In addition, Waller-Bridge has been tapped to breathe new life into the latest James Bond film. No Time to Die, which is the 25th instalment of the spy saga, is set to be released in April next year.

“I’m insanely excited to be continuing my relationship with Amazon,” said Waller-Bridge. “Working with the team on Fleabag was the creative partnership dreams are made of.”
