Football Association of Wales reject Hull City’s approach for national team boss Chris Coleman
Hull City’s search for a new manager has suffered a blow after the Football Association of Wales rejected an approach from the Tigers to speak with national team boss Chris Coleman.
The Premier League side have been hunting a replacement for Steve Bruce after the former Manchester United skipper quit last month following a breakdown in his relationship with vice-chairman Ehab Allam.
Coleman signed a fresh two-year deal with Wales in May although his stock has risen dramatically, having steered the principality to the semi-finals of the European Championship in France during the summer.
“The Football Association of Wales can confirm that it has received an official approach from Hull City FC for the services of manager Chris Coleman,” read a statement.
“Following discussions amongst leading figures within the association the approach has been rejected. Chris Coleman signed a new two-year contract in May 2016 ahead of the Uefa European Championship in France and the Fifa World Cup in 2018.
“Everybody at the Football Association of Wales are fully focused on the forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.”
Bruce’s resignation followed his failure to land the England job, a post for which he was interviewed but lost out to former West Ham, Bolton and Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce.
That left Hull in desperate need of a replacement only weeks before the start of the new Premier League campaign, having returned to the top flight at the first time of asking last term. Another name in the frame is ex-Chelsea forward Gianfranco Zola.
