Football betting: History repeating with Spurs and Liverpool set to share spoils
For both Tottenham and Liverpool fans, the wait for a league title is long overdue.
It’s been 55 years since Spurs were champions, and the most recent of Liverpool’s 18 wins came in 1990. Neither have won since the formation of the Premier League.
Both have come close in recent years – Liverpool narrowly missing out under Brendan Rodgers in 2014, while Spurs challenged Leicester until late last season – without being able to get over the line.
Their meeting at White Hart Lane on Saturday lunchtime should give us a good indication whether either are likely to end the long wait this campaign.
Spurs have strengthened over the summer, adding depth to a squad that looked exhausted by May last term.
Dutch striker Vincent Janssen already looks as though he is developing a good understanding with Harry Kane, with another signing, Victor Wanyama, scoring the only goal in last week’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
With Champions League football this year, that extra quality in reserve could pay dividends for Tottenham as the season unfolds.
Liverpool have also seen new players impress, with Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum excellent in the opening weekend win at Arsenal – but the Reds also fell to an embarrassing 2-0 reversal at Burnley.
Jurgen Klopp will hope another visit to north London will see a return to the free-flowing football seen at the Emirates, rather than the drab fare from Turf Moor.
Both matches between these two last year were draws, and I can’t split them.
This early in the season, with both teams likely to be direct rivals, I don’t think either manager would be too upset with a point, which is available at 12/5 with Betway.
Spurs have been pretty cagey so far, with only three goals in their two games.
Despite Liverpool’s feared attack, which put five past Burton in midweek to go with the four against Arsenal, they struggled badly to break down the organisation of Burnley.
Up against a mean Tottenham backline, I think we’ll see a low-scoring affair.
