Former Chelsea, West Ham and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard set to embark on new career after announcing decision to quit New York City FC
Former England midfielder Frank Lampard is poised to embark on the next stage of his career after announcing his intention to quit New York City FC at the end of the year.
The 38-year-old, who remains Chelsea’s record goal-scorer, joined the MLS club in July 2014 after 13 years at Stamford Bridge, and found the net 15 times in 31 appearances.
New York City were thrashed 7-0 by Toronto FC in the MLS play-offs earlier this month, leaving Lampard, who has previously hinted at a move into coaching, with time to ponder his immediate and long-term future.
“I leave with many great memories as I embark on the next stage of my career and I’ll be making an announcement very soon,” Lampard wrote on Instagram.
Ex-West Ham academy graduate Lampard scored New York City’s first ever hat-trick, although his start to life in America was delayed by a loan move to Manchester City, who fall under the same ownership as his current side.
“As my time at New York City comes to an end, I would like to thank so many people for the kindness and support they have shown me over the last two years,” added Lampard.
“My team-mates have been a pleasure to play alongside. The fans have given me incredible support and backing. I have very much enjoyed my time, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play for such a great club.”
Lampard may not be the only Englishman set to depart the United States as speculation continues to surround the future of former England skipper Steven Gerrard, whose contract is also due to expire at the end of the season.
