Former New York Times editor Jill Abramson to join Guardian as political columnist
The former executive editor of the New York Times, Jill Abramson, will formally join the Guardian's US arm as a political columnist, the newspaper announced today.
"For over 40 years, Jill has been a trailblazer for women in journalism, and brings an unparalleled knowledge of the relationship between politics and the media in the US," Lee Glendinning, editor of Guardian US, said in a statement.
"We’re delighted to add her experience, depth and gravitas to our distinct take on this fascinating election."
Abramson was dismissed from the New York Times in May 2014, after less than three years in the role of editor, and was succeeded by Dean Baquet.
She has recently written articles for The Guardian about the American elections and will continue to contribute to the newspaper's presidential race coverage this year.
Earlier this month, the Guardian Media Group announced plans to cut 250 jobs in an attempt to balance its finances. The owner of the Guardian and Observer newspapers said 100 of the jobs would be in editorial, while less profitable sections of the company will be restructured.
