Europe prepares for first total solar eclipse in two decades

On 12 August 2026 a total solar eclipse will sweep across mainland Europe, the first such event since 2006, drawing crowds and scientists alike.

A total solar eclipse is set to occur on 12 August 2026, casting a narrow band of darkness across parts of mainland Europe, the first time the continent will see totality since the eclipse of 2006.

Why the event matters

The spectacle promises more than a fleeting twilight. Tourists, photographers and researchers are already booking travel to the narrow "path of totality" to witness a rare celestial alignment that can boost local economies and provide a unique window for solar‑corona studies. In a year marked by extreme weather events, the eclipse also offers a reminder of the delicate balance of Earth’s climate system.

During a total eclipse the Moon moves directly between the Sun and Earth, briefly obscuring the Sun’s bright disc. NASA explains that the coincidence of the Sun being roughly 400 times larger than the Moon yet also about 400 times farther away makes totality possible for observers in the right spot.

"Even though the Sun is about 400 times bigger than the Moon, it is also about 400 times farther away," the US space agency says.

Where and how long you can watch

The eclipse will first be total in a remote part of northern Russia before the shadow moves across Greenland, Iceland, and then over the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain the path will sweep from the northern city of Oviedo to the island of Mallorca, while the northeastern tip of Portugal also falls within the band. In the city of Burgos, totality will last exactly one minute and 48 seconds, ending just before sunset.

Partial phases, when the Moon only covers part of the Sun, will be visible across most of Europe, as well as Canada, the northern United States and north‑west Africa, lasting roughly one hour and 45 minutes. The remaining sliver of sunlight remains intensely bright.

"Even one percent of the Sun that is not obscured is 4,000 times as bright as the full Moon," said Paris Observatory astrophysicist Alain Doressoundiram.

Staying safe while watching

Looking directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage. Experts advise using eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2:2015 standard, which filter out harmful ultraviolet radiation. After the 2024 US eclipse, many people reported eye discomfort, underscoring the importance of proper protection.

What comes next

The next total solar eclipse over Europe will not arrive until 2027, when a longer event will cross southern Spain, northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, lasting over six minutes. An annular eclipse, a "ring of fire", will pass over southern Spain on 26 January 2028. The next total eclipse of comparable length after that is not expected until 2114.

For now, astronomers and travellers alike are counting down to what could be one of the most memorable sky‑watching moments of the decade.
