Stuttgart court sentences a Ukrainian national for a sabotage plot tied to Russia, highlighting heightened security concerns in Europe.

Stuttgart court sentenced Yevhen Bezchasnyi, a 30‑year‑old Ukrainian, to time served for organising a sabotage‑related shipment of GPS trackers. The devices were sent to Ukraine in March 2024 as part of a test run aimed at mapping transport routes, a scheme prosecutors say was directed by a Russian state entity.
Bezchasnyi was arrested in Switzerland in May 2025 and extradited to Germany later that year. The court found he acted on behalf of an acquaintance from the Russian‑occupied city of Mariupol, organising two parcels that also contained spare car parts. He handed the trackers to a 22‑year‑old defendant in Konstanz, who forwarded them to Cologne. From there a 25‑year‑old sent the devices to Ukraine via a local shipping service.
Two other Ukrainian men, aged 22 and 25, were acquitted because the court could not prove they knew the operation was part of a sabotage plan. Prosecutors had also alleged a separate plot to mail explosive devices, but evidence linking the defendants to that scheme was lacking.
"hybrid attack scenario"
Alexander Dobrindt, Germany’s interior minister, described a recent discovery of an explosives‑laden drone near a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig‑Halle airport as a potential hybrid attack involving a foreign power, though he stopped short of naming Russia.
The conviction comes as Germany remains Ukraine’s biggest European backer and has been on high alert for espionage tied to the ongoing war. While Bezchasnyi will be released, having already served his custodial time, the ruling sends a clear signal that authorities will pursue similar cases aggressively.
Legal experts expect the verdict to reinforce cooperation between German and Ukrainian security services and could lead to tighter customs checks on parcels containing electronic components. The broader narrative ties into concerns highlighted in recent coverage of war and tax clouds looming over Europe.
