Ex‑prime minister Imran Khan was shifted to a Islamabad hospital on a Supreme Court order, prompting a heavy police deployment and a wave of public support.

Hundreds of police officers, some brandishing sticks, cordoned off the roads leading to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad as former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were escorted inside.
The transfer follows a Supreme Court ruling that ordered Khan’s hospitalisation within two days, after his lawyers argued his health was deteriorating.
"The Supreme Court's order has been complied with," said Zulfi Bukhari, spokesperson for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.Supporters gathered outside the private facility, waving red flower petals and chanting slogans, while former president Arif Alvi posted on X that the nation was "happy and dancing with joy".
The three‑bench Supreme Court also stipulated that Khan may see his family once a week and speak to his sons by phone twice a week. A panel of specialists, including his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, will oversee his treatment. Earlier this year, Khan underwent eye surgery that left him with limited vision in his right eye.
Khan, who led the country from 2018 to 2022 before being ousted in a no‑confidence vote, was sentenced late last year to 17 years in prison on corruption charges he describes as politically motivated. His arrest ignited large‑scale protests in May 2023 and has kept the PTI base mobilised.
Legal experts expect further appeals and possible international scrutiny, while the PTI is likely to use Khan’s health as a rallying point in upcoming elections. The government’s handling of the case will be watched closely for signs of either de‑escalation or further confrontation.
