Middle East live: Trump threatens economic punishment on 'any country' helping Iran

Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Wednesday to declare what he called the "most crushing economic operation" ever directed at a sovereign nation. The former president warned that any country allowing its banks, businesses, airports or government entities to aid Iran would be hit with "tremendous economic consequences". He offered no details on the measures, nor did he name any specific state.

ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.

The threat comes amid stalled talks between the United States and Tehran over the war that began in 2025. While Washington claims the Strait of Hormuz remains open, Iranian officials have repeatedly said the waterway is effectively shut, underscoring the high stakes of the standoff.

Iran pushes back

Abbas Araqchi, Iran’s foreign minister, dismissed the US proclamation as a diversion from domestic economic woes. He cautioned that additional pressure would not achieve Washington’s aims, suggesting the move is designed to rally domestic support ahead of upcoming elections.

Why the warning matters

Economic sanctions have long been a cornerstone of US policy toward Tehran, but a blanket threat against any third‑party state raises the risk of wider market disruption. Companies operating in Europe or Asia could face secondary sanctions, prompting banks to reassess relationships with Iranian counterparts.

What could happen next

Analysts expect Washington to outline concrete steps in the coming days, possibly targeting shipping, insurance and finance sectors that facilitate Iranian trade. Allies may be pressured to align with the US stance, while countries wary of antagonising Tehran could seek diplomatic channels to avoid punitive measures.

For now, the international community watches closely, weighing the potential economic fallout against the strategic goal of curbing Iran’s regional influence.
