Middle East live: US says Israel behind strikes on military airport in Syria

On Tuesday, senior US officials announced that Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on the disused Abu al‑Duhur airbase in north‑western Syria. The United States described the attacks as an unnecessary escalation that does not further regional stability.

The comment came from Tom Barrack, the US special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq, who used the social‑media platform X to express Washington’s concern. He urged all sides to "prioritise logical discourse over further military actions" and warned that the incident could undermine diplomatic efforts.

"The confirmed Israeli airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur Airbase constitute an unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability," Barrack wrote.

He also said Washington was "deeply concerned" by the strike.

The accusation adds a new strain to an already fragile US‑Israel coordination framework. It follows a recent spate of regional incidents, including Iranian missile alerts in the United Arab Emirates and a Houthi attack on a Saudi refinery, highlighting a broader pattern of heightened tension across the Middle East.

Analysts say the US may now press Israel to curb further operations in Syria, while Tehran and other regional actors could cite the episode to justify their own military posturing. Behind‑the‑scenes discussions are expected to take place in Washington and Jerusalem, with the risk that any misstep could trigger a wider confrontation.

The episode was first reported by the original wire report.
