FTSE 100 edges toward record as investors sidestep AI volatility

The blue‑chip index is on track for a new high as traders favour sectors untouched by the AI rally.

By
The FTSE 100 enjoyed a 3-year record rally in the third quarter.

FTSE 100 rose 0.18 per cent to 10,875 in early trade on Tuesday, marking its fifth consecutive day of gains. At that level the index is within striking distance of the all‑time intraday peak of 10,989 set on the final trading day of July.

Record‑chasing run

London’s blue‑chip market has been buoyed by a mix of defensive sectors that are largely insulated from the recent turbulence in artificial‑intelligence‑heavy stocks. Analysts point to the index’s modest weighting to technology as a key factor.

"The FTSE’s relatively low exposure to the tech sector is also helping it avoid some of the turbulence rippling through global tech shares, giving investors a different mix of sectors to rely on," said Susannah Streeter, chief investment strategist at Wealth Club.

Mining stocks lead the charge

Heavyweight miners have added momentum. Glencore jumped 7.4 per cent over the past five days, trading around 592.9p, while Fresnillo climbed ten per cent in the last week and Rio Tinto added 8.8 per cent. Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor, said investors were seeking calm before a potentially stormy week that includes consumer‑confidence data, GDP, inflation figures, Nvidia’s update and the Jackson Hole symposium.

Looking ahead

The index’s trajectory now hinges on the outcome of Nvidia’s earnings report, which will offer a snapshot of AI demand. Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, warned that the results could swing markets either way.

Oil prices added a note of caution, with Brent crude slipping 2.3 per cent to $89.7, as U.S. threats toward Iran kept the market subdued. Streeter noted that the geopolitical backdrop could either resolve the tension or introduce another layer of uncertainty for investors.

Should the AI rally lose steam, the FTSE’s defensive tilt may continue to attract capital, potentially pushing the index above its historic high. Conversely, a strong Nvidia showing could reignite risk‑on sentiment, pulling funds back into tech‑heavy markets.
