Germany braces for deepest partial solar eclipse in decades as August delivers triple celestial treat

Germany is set for its most striking partial solar eclipse in more than a quarter of a century on Wednesday evening, as the Moon slides across the Sun and blocks between 85 and 90 percent of its light just before sunset. While the path of totality passes over Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, Germany sits just outside it, meaning daylight will dim noticeably but not plunge into near darkness.

The eclipse begins between 7:10 pm and 7:25 pm depending on location, reaches maximum coverage shortly after 8 pm and continues until the Sun sets. Northern regions will enjoy a slightly longer window, and Freiburg is forecast to see the highest obscuration at roughly 90 percent. Astronomers stress that a clear, low horizon is essential because the Sun will be hovering close to the skyline throughout the event; hills or elevated viewpoints can make the difference between a clear view and a missed opportunity.

Eye safety is non-negotiable

Looking at the Sun even when it is mostly covered can cause permanent retinal damage. Ordinary sunglasses offer no protection. Observers must use eclipse glasses certified to the DIN EN ISO 12312-2:2015 standard, available from astronomy retailers, science museums, planetariums, some opticians and pharmacies, and major online sellers. Multi-packs typically cost €12 to €19 for five to twelve pairs, while individual glasses can be found for about €2.50. Eclipse glasses do not make binoculars, telescopes or cameras safe; those instruments require dedicated solar filters fitted to their front optics.

Two more reasons to watch the sky

The celestial calendar does not stop with the eclipse. Hours after the Sun sets on 12 August, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its annual peak, often producing dozens of shooting stars per hour under dark, clear skies. Then, on the morning of 28 August, a large partial lunar eclipse will be visible as the Moon sets. The pairing is no coincidence: solar and lunar eclipses frequently occur within a fortnight of each other because both require the Sun, Earth and Moon to align.

Weather will decide the show

Forecasts will be the final arbiter. Even a thin band of cloud hugging the horizon can obscure the entire event, so checking local predictions and keeping a flexible viewing plan is advised. For those who get a clear window, the combination of a deep partial eclipse, a meteor shower and a lunar eclipse makes August a standout month for skywatchers across the country.
