Goodwood success confirms the return of Tregoning yard
TRAINER Marcus Tregoning hailed the return to form of his resurgent Lambourn yard after Finjaan collected in the feature race on day one of Glorious Goodwood, the Betfair Cup.
Tregoning’s yard have been hit by a low-grade infection for much of the season, culminating in six-week shutdown and a 91-day losing streak, finally ended by Sterling Sound’s success at Ascot on Sunday.
But 5-1 shot Finjaan, ridden by Tadhg O’Shea, ensured the comeback continued with a powerful run in this seven-furlong highlight, edging out Balthazaar’s Gift by half-a-length.
“I absolutely love to win races at this meeting and it is our Ascot,” a delighted Tregoning said. “The horses haven’t been right but I always knew it would come right in the end so long as the owners stand by me, and Sheikh Hamdan has had plenty of experience of this with other trainers.”
Regal Parade, the 16-1 shot, came home third ahead of a tiring JJ The Jet Plane in fourth, although favourite Main Aim faded in the latter stages.
Meanwhile, Harbinger took up the step up in Group in his stride when running out winner of the Betfair Gordon Stakes. The Dansili colt was sent off 11-4 favourite in the hands of Ryan Moore and justified his backing with an impressive win over Firebet. He is now the early 3-1 favourite for the St Leger at Doncaster.
Elsewhere, Monsieur Chevalier won his sixth race in seven starts to take the Betfair Molecomb Stakes, while Manyriverstocross, the 5-1 favourite, landed the Summer Stakes.
