Google Ideas think tank becomes Jigsaw in latest Alphabet renaming
First Google surprised us with a name change to Alphabet, now, it's taken further inspiration from the kids' playroom with its latest renaming.
Google Ideas, the search giant's think tank, will be called Jigsaw from now on and will expand its focus to become a technology incubator.
"The team’s mission is to use technology to tackle the toughest geopolitical challenges, from countering violent extremism to thwarting online censorship to mitigating the threats associated with digital attacks," said Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt.

The new name, in fact, comes from the idea that the "world is a complex puzzle of physical and digital challenges".
Jigsaw will be run by Google Ideas boss Jared Cohen and it will expand from simply producing research on areas such as online censorship, corruption and violence, digital extremism and how technology can address that, to include the building of that technology beyond its existing projects.
"As a technology incubator, Jigsaw will be investing in and building technology to expand access to information for the world’s most vulnerable populations and to defend against the world’s most challenging security threats," said Schmidt.
