Greek unemployment hits fresh highs
The number of unemployed people between the ages of 15 and 24 in Greece hit 64.9 per cent in May, up from 55.1 per cent the year before.
Unemployment for the country at a whole rose to a record high of 27.6 per cent from an upwardly revised 27.0 per cent the month before and 23.8 per cent in May 2012.
The number of people unemployed amounted to 1.381m and the number of inactive people was 3.319m. This vastly outstrips the 3.621m in employment – a 0.6 per cent monthly decrease and a 4.5 per cent fall from May 2012.
Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras today arrived in Washington ahead of talks with US president Barack Obama.
