Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton could sign a new contract this week, according to Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

The Brit’s £40m-a-season deal runs out at the end of this season and the signature of the 38-year-old will be a high value item.

“It is going to happen soon, and we are talking more days than weeks,” Wolff said.

“We are trying hard [to get it done before the Canadian Grand Prix]. I will see him today and maybe we will talk about it.

“We have such a good relationship that we dread the moment that we need to talk about money.

“He is so multi-faceted, not only with the racing, but also off track, so we need to keep him in the sport for as long as possible.”

There have been rumoured approaches from other teams.

The Formula 1 circus heads to Canada this weekend where Hamilton will aim for his first podium of the season.

Red Bull and Aston Martin have been the dominant forces thus far in 2023 but Mercedes and Alpine have managed to reach the podium.

After Canada, the series moves back to Europe with races in Austria, Great Britain, Hungary and Belgium before the summer break.

Hamilton has been at Mercedes for much of his career and won six of his seven titles with Mercedes in their current format.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is looking to buy Manchester United, has a stake in Hamilton’s Mercedes.
