Hammers still in dogfight after late Webber strike

PORTSMOUTH substitute Danny Webber climbed off the bench to score his first goal for the club and earn them a crucial point against fellow strugglers West Ham.
The Hammers looked on course for their first away win since the opening day of the season when captain Matthew Upson put them ahead early in the second half. But with just a quarter of an hour remaining Webber, who had only been on the pitch for two minutes, notched for the first time since joining from Sheffield United last summer to grab a share of the spoils.
The draw leaves Portsmouth rooted to the bottom of the table, four points adrift of Hull, who also have a game in hand.
West Ham lie 16th, but only goal difference ahead of 18th-placed Burnley, and in a race against time to bring in new faces before Monday’s transfer deadline.
The first is likely to be Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy, while ex-Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen is poised to follow from Monaco.
