Henson relishing Wilko link
WALES star Gavin Henson admits the chance to play alongside Jonny Wilkinson at Toulon was a major factor in him opting for a move to the French club.
The 29-year-old ended an 18-month self-imposed exile from the sport last December and joined Saracens, but he made just four appearances for the London club.
Henson agreed a five-month contract with the Top 14 club yesterday – he will train with his new teammates for the first time on Monday – following in the footsteps of fellow Welshmen Lee Bryne and James Hook, who will join Clermont Auvergne and Perpignan, respectively, from next season.
On the prospect of teaming up with Wilkinson, currently enjoying his second season in France, Henson said: “It was just a massive opportunity for me. I couldn’t really pass up on it. Looking at a clause in my contract as well, and plus [director of rugby] Philippe [Saint-Andre] was really keen for me to play 12 at Toulon and start straight away, so more or less start playing next week.
“And also cover 10 when Jonny’s not there, and to obviously play alongside Jonny Wilkinson – 10-12 – that is going to be amazing.”
