The five most popular credit cards of 2016 have been revealed today and, unsurprisingly, it turns out customers love getting rewards for spending their money, with cashback cards topping the list.

Train commuter, furniture-lover or jet-setter; there's a reward scheme to suit everyone. Here's a run down of the cards people have been searching for most on Which? Money Compare comparison site, and the benefits you can get from them:

1. Nationwide Select Credit Card

The rewards on offer from Nationwide are attracting a lot of attention. Customers get £25 for transferring a balance or spending more than £25 in the first 60 days, as well as a 0.5 per cent cashback on purchases. Its APR is 15.9 per cent.

2. John Lewis and Waitrose partnership cards

These family-friendly brands have already won approval for their credit cards – a previous survey by Which? gave them a customer satisfaction score of 81 per cent. If you love your John Lewis garden furniture, this is the card for you. Users earn reward points which they can exchange for in-store vouchers; you get a point for every £1 spent in store or online at John Lewis, and 500 points earns you a £5 voucher. Its APR is 16.9 per cent.

3. Saga Over 50s Platinum card

Planning some extravagant holidays for your retirement? The Saga card is perfect for holiday-makers as it has no foreign currency fee. For the first nine months it also offers zero per cent interest on purchases and balance transfers. It has an APR of 11.9 per cent.

4. Santander 123 Clarity card

If you're a commuter, then the Santander card will make your morning journey feel a little more rewarding; users get three per cent cashback on transport costs such a National Rail train tickets and petrol.

The card also rewards  day-to-day spending, offering two per cent cashback at the big department stores and one per cent cashback on shopping from the major supermarket chains.

The downside is the card has an annual fee of £36, so it is more expensive to use overall than others with the same APR (18.4 per cent).

5. Halifax Clarity card

Like the Saga card, this card from Halifax is great for jet-setters as it doesn't charge fees for using it overseas. However, it has a higher APR at 18.9 per cent and there's no period of zero per cent on purchases and balance transfers.
