HMV Westfield reopens as new owner continues rental negotiations

HMV’s Westfield store in Shepherd's Bush has reopened today, as new owner Doug Putman continues his efforts to negotiate with landlords in a bid to bring back stores that have been earmarked for closure.

The Canadian entrepreneur has been striking deals with property groups to reopen closed outlets that were shut down as a result of the retailer’s administration earlier this year, which led to 27 stores being closed.

Roughly a third of the stores that had been earmarked for closure have been reopened in the last month, with today’s reopening of the HMV in Westfield coming after stores in Merry Hill, Tunbridge Wells, and Plymouth, Reading and Meadowhall have all raised their shutters.

Today's opening of the group's White City branch was announced on Twitter by the music chain, which was was bought by Putman’s Sunrise Records after collapsing into administration in December.

Putman, a self-proclaimed lover of vinyl records who snapped up the beleaguered music chain from administrators in early February, has also been trying to reopen the group’s flagship Oxford Street branch, which ended its 98-year residence as part of the administration.

Plans for 27 store closures were announced as part of the acquisition, with Putman telling the BBC that the closures come in the wake of continued rent rises.
