He may come from humble beginnings but Sadiq Khan is now set to earn some serious dosh.

His punchline for his mayoral campaign was “I’m the son of a bus driver”. The Tooting MP, whose parents are Pakistani immigrants, grew up in a modest south London housing estate with his seven siblings. He slept in a bunkbed until he was 24.

Things have looked up since then.

Since becoming an MP in 2005, Khan has earned a grand total of £647,406

As mayor, the 45-year old is set draw an annual salary of £143,911.

The real money may be in books.

Last year, the previous mayor Boris Johnson signed a £500,000 deal with US publishers Hodder & Stoughton to write a biography of William Shakespeare.
