Hugo Boss fined £1.2m over four-year-old’s death
German designer Hugo Boss has been fined over the death of a four-year-old boy killed in a store when a mirror fell on top of him.
An inquest has concluded that the store should have done more to prevent the mirror falling, and fined the company £1.2m.
The accident occurred in the summer of 2013 at a Hugo Boss pop-up store in Bicester Village, Oxfordshire. The boy was in the store with his parents when a huge 18st mirror toppled over and crushed him.
The 7ft tall mirror had been left standing free, rather than fixed to a wall, described in the inquest as an “accident waiting to happen”.
Oxford Crown Court ruled that Hugo Boss did have a corporate responsibility, and Hugo Boss has admitted to offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
