Major international cricket tournaments such as the Cricket World Cup, Champions Trophy and World Twenty20 will be sponsored by Japanese carmaker Nissan until 2023 after it agreed an eight-year sponsorship deal with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Nissan will replace Hyundai as the ICC's main sponsor.

Its first significant foray into cricket follows an increased brand presence in other sports such as football where last year it reached an agreement with Manchester City owners City Football Group.

ICC chief executive David Richardson said:

The ICC is delighted to welcome Nissan on board as a global partner and we look forward to working together for the next eight years to deliver a strong partnership at all ICC's global events.

Nissan is one of the world's leading motor companies and boasts a strong international presence in both new and established markets.

Nissan corporate vice president and global head of marketing Roel de Vries said that it would look to work with the ICC to improve the live event experience for cricket fans.
