Ice queen Amy cool on hero status
SKELETON Olympic champion Amy Williams may have become a household name overnight but the unassuming 27-year-old insists she already cannot wait for the limelight to fade.
Williams twice set new course records at Whistler, the fastest and most dangerous of all ice tracks, on her way to clinching Great Britain’s first individual Winter Games gold for 30 years on Friday night.
It earned the Bath athlete a personal message of congratulation from Prime Minister Gordon Brown and will ensure her a hero’s welcome when she flies back from Canada, although Williams is looking forward to more down-to-earth pleasures.
“I never thought I’d win an Olympic medal and it’s not going to change me,” she said.
“I don’t know when I’ll get my life back, but I can’t wait to go horse riding and do things I stopped doing because I had to concentrate so hard this past year. I can’t wait to do so-called normal things again.”
