‘I’ll quit the Super Six’, vows beaten champ Froch
DEFEATED Carl Froch has threatened to pull out of the Super Six tournament if his next fight is switched from Nottingham to Berlin.
The 32-year-old claimed he was the victim of an unjust points verdict when losing his WBC super-middleweight title to Mikkel Kessler in his home country, Denmark, on Saturday night.
With that, the ‘Cobra’ lost his 26-fight unbeaten record, but the fall-out has now shifted focus towards the Englishman’s next Super Six bout, against German-based Armenian Arthur Abraham in August.
Froch and his promoter, Mick Hennessy, claim to have a long-standing agreement to host the fight in Britain, but Sauerland Events, who promote both Kessler and Abraham, insist they want the fight staged in Abraham’s back yard, in Berlin.
Now Froch, who began his Super Six campaign with a narrow points victory over American Andre Dirrell in Nottingham back in October, has vowed to walk away unless the agreement is honoured.
“I am adamant that the next fight, with Arthur Abraham, will be taking place in Britain,” he said. “I won’t be fighting in Germany, it’s as simple as that. It would mean me pulling out of the tournament if they forced me to fight in Berlin. “So I want to get that straight from the start: it has already been agreed that I would fight at home, fight away and a fight back at home.
“So my fight with Abraham is in England or the fight is not happening and will make a mockery of the tournament. It’s as simple as that.”
Withdrawing from the Super Six would be a major stance for Froch, who knows it is his best chance of reclaiming his WBC title, and maybe even unifying it with Andre Ward’s WBA belt. “A win against Abraham puts me in the semi-final and then there is the final,” Froch added.
“I can still be undisputed champion in my next three fights, let’s not forget that. This fight is going to make me stronger, better and more determined.”
