Injured Pietersen faces wait over third Test recovery bid
ENGLAND will delay a decision on whether Kevin Pietersen is fit for next week’s third Ashes Test until the batsman has sought specialist advice on his troublesome Achilles.
Pietersen has struggled with the injury all year and suffered discomfort during England’s second Test victory at Lord’s earlier this week.
The Hampshire player scored 32 and 44 against Australia during England’s two innings and has admitted the persistent problem is hindering his game. But as selectors prepare to name the squad this weekend, head coach Andy Flower insists they will wait for medical advice before ruling out Pietersen.
“He’s been struggling quite badly with that Achilles injury for a period of time. It’s an uncomfortable injury to have, especially in a Test match,” said Flower.
“You’re always on your feet. If you bat for any period of time you’re scampering between the wickets and you feel it all the time – there’s no getting away from it.
“It does make life a bit uncomfortable for an athlete to have that sort of injury, but he’s going to be re-assessed later this week.
“He’s got a couple of people he’s going to be talking to and then the experts will make a decision on whether he’s OK or not.”
Pietersen has already had cortisone and homeopathic injections into his Achilles in recent weeks, as well as further jabs for a back problem.
England also have major concerns over the fitness of all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who inspired the 115-run win with a five-wicket haul. The third Test at Edgbaston starts on 30 July.
