Jeremy Corbyn wins Labour leadership backing from yet another union

Left-wing Jeremy Corbyn has won the backing of the Communication Workers Union in the Labour leadership race, marking the latest in a string of backing wins from the unions. 

 

 

Dave Ward, general secretary of the 200,000 member union, told the BBC that Corbyn was the “antidote” to the “virus within the Labour party”, in reference to what he perceived to be the increasing grip of the Blairites.  

 

"We reject the notion that Labour needs to move to the centre ground of British politics,” he said. "The centre ground has moved significantly to the right in recent years."

 

 

Corbyn has already been nominated by Unite and Unison, the two biggest unions in the UK, and also by the Transport Salaried Staffs Association. 

 

Support for the Islington North MP has surged recently, and yesterday he became bookmakers' favourite to win the contest, overtaking former frontrunner Andy Burnham.
