Jones double gores Wolves
SUNDERLAND boss Steve Bruce berated his side’s calamitous defending despite seeing them smash five past sorry Wolves to go eighth in the Premier League.
Striker Kenwyne Jones grabbed a brace with Darren Bent, Michael Turner and a Michael Mancienne own goal completing the rout.
But Bruce was angered by his side’s woeful defence as John Mensah’s own goal and a Kevin Doyle tap-in brought Wolves level at 2-2 before the Black Cats rallied late on.
“It is just an incredible result but at times our defending was comical. The coaching staff have to sort out the situation defensively,” he said. “Thankfully at the top end of the pitch we have a genuine threat and have used them to get out of jail.”
Bent opened the scoring after nine minutes, picking himself off the floor to dispatch the penalty after being felled by Segundo Castillo.
Minutes after half time, Bent was again upended, this time by Christophe Berra, and Jones tucked in the resulting spot kick.
Wolves responded instantly when Mensah unluckily chested into his own net after Craig Gordon palmed a cross straight at the defender.
Kieran Richardson was to blame for Wolves’ equaliser, sending an awful back-pass to Gordon who had no choice but to handle the ball and concede a free-kick six yards out. Karl Henry’s effort cannoned off the wall but Doyle was on hand to slot home.
Jones’s fierce, low 25-yard shot restored Sunderland’s lead before Turner headed in for his first for the club. The result was put beyond doubt when Mancienne inadvertently deflected Bent’s strike past Wayne Hennessy, condemning Wolves to a fourth league defeat of the season.
