Khan scoops shock win at Wentworth
UNFANCIED Englishman Simon Khan admitted his disbelief after producing the biggest last-day comeback ever seen at the BMW PGA Championship to land the European Tour’s flagship tournament.
Khan, ranked 471st in the world when he received a last-minute invite on Monday, was tied for 13th when he teed off for his final round at a scorching Wentworth yesterday.
But a five-under-par 66 left him on six under for the competition, and that proved enough to earn him the winners’ cheque of £637,000 as his rivals fell by the wayside one-by-one.
“I honestly thought I was too far back but you never know around here – you can have big swings in scores,” said Khan. “If I could pick one event, bar the Open, this would be it. It’s just amazing. It’s what I’ve always dreamed of doing, but it can happen sometimes.”
Fellow Englishman Luke Donald looked set to challenge Khan before double-bogeying the 17th, and then came within inches of an eagle at the last – the most controversial hole of Ernie Els’ new course design – that would have forced a play-off.
He had to make do with a tie for second place with Sweden’s Fredrik Andersson Hed, while overnight leader Chris Wood carded a disappointing 77 and ended sixth.
